Read time: 2 mins

With increasing concerns around novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and the escalating spread of the virus, NatRoad suggests that our members stay informed about the virus and its potential impacts.

The Australian Government recently issued a health alert as a precaution. The latest advice, information and contact details can be found on the Australian Department of Health website.

COVID-19 originated in China and is having an increasing impact on the global community with medical advice rapidly evolving.

COVID-19 is a new strain, that has not been previously identified in humans. It is classified as a respiratory illness. Symptoms range from a mild cough to pneumonia. Some people recover easily, others may get very sick very quickly. There is evidence that it spreads from person to person. Good hygiene can prevent infection.

Transmission is thought to be from coughing, sneezing, or direct contact with respiratory secretions from an infected person. You can also contract it by touching objects or surfaces (such as door handles or tables) contaminated from a cough or sneeze from a person with a confirmed infection, and then touching your mouth or face.

In order to minimise risk of COVID-19, firstly avoid exposure. Exposure is very unlikely without travelling to countries at risk.

The Australian government currently considers the following countries to be higher risk:
•    China
•    Iran
•    Italy
•    Republic of Korea

A formal travel restriction and 14 day quarantine apply to the listed countries above. See the Department of Health website for further updates on travel.

The Government will continue making daily updates with the latest medical advice and official reports and we urge members to stay informed.
